Many people believed that hip-hop encouraged violence and disorder, and this belief led to public destruction of CDs by artists like the controversial rap group NWA. Today, the general perception of this genre is very different. Now, hip-hop is percieved as a healthy, lyrical outlet for the injustice that we face in society. Not only has this style of music greatly affected American culture and values, but its influence has reached countries around the world. Senegal, in particular, is using hip-hop to create social change in their country, which is a concept that was once unfathomable."
